Three Massachusetts health centers are participating in a pilot program with local farmers’ markets to alleviate obesity in children and low-income families by increasing their consumption of fruits and vegetables. Doctors in participating health centers will give coupons of $1 a day for each member of a family of four in 50 families and will track their progress. To read the article click here.

“United Way grant boosts local youth groups in Lowell”

The United Way of Massachusetts Bay & Merrimack Valley has awarded $100,000 to 13 youth programs in Lowell. The grants are a part of the Summer Experiences in Greater Lowell (SEGL) initiative and are largely financed by the Parker Foundation. The initiative is expected to serve 3,000 Lowell area youths with quality summer programming focused on developing leadership and social and academic skills while school is not in session.

“Cleaning up China’s ugly river”

Pacific Environment and Resources Center and its partner in China, Green Anhui, were featured in an article about extreme water pollution in some of Asia’s most iconic rivers. The organizations were engaged in a two-year struggle against entrenched interests and lax enforcement of regulations to shut down three chemical plants that were dumping a toxic soup into the Huai River Basin causing an alarming increase in cancer deaths.

Every Friday and Saturday during peak evening hours for juvenile crime and violence, 25 police officers bring up to 100 children from the Boston’s housing developments to the Sportsmen’s Tennis Club, first African-American owned nonprofit tennis club in the United States.   A Boston Globe article reports on the partnership that helps youth to bridge neighborhood divides and build new relationships through playing tennis.
