Phil joined GMA in 1988 and became a principal in 1992. His career in philanthropy has included staffing of independent, family, and corporate giving programs, and he has worked on numerous special initiatives, including the design of new giving programs, strategic planning, and research of issue areas in the fields of education, race relations, and community development. His work includes the creation of a new community foundation, supervising the close of a New England charitable lead trust, and venture-type funding for promising startup organizations.
As director of grantmaking at GMA, he takes a special interest in promoting talent within and without the company, and in analyzing giving trends among GMA’s exceptionally varied client base. He serves as treasurer of Boston Education Funders and as clerk of the board of Philanthropy Massachusetts.
Phil is a graduate of Marlboro College and Boston University, where he received a master’s degree in piano performance. In his spare time, he enjoys reading and running, spending time with family and friends, and communing with the great composers.
